About 10 years ago, before I built websites “for real,” I was asked by a friend for a referral to someone who built WordPress websites.
Immediately, I knew to direct her to someone I adored who built sites from the ground up. She offered every single aspect from getting the hosting to designing graphics to publishing the new site.
She charged around $2500 at the time. My friend flipped out. “No way! That’s way too much and so not worth it and how dare she charge so much and omg that’s so much money!!”
Needless to say, she didn’t use her service.
Fast forward to now, I completely understand why she charged so much.
At the time, it was a lot of money. Still is, but it’s a rather ‘average’ rate now (and still higher than what I charge). But now I see that she completely undercharged herself.
Why, you ask?
She was basically offering 3 different people’s jobs:
- Graphic design (time consuming, totally personalized)
- Copywriting (editing, writing, time consuming) and
- Web development (installing the site, creating all the pages, making everything custom)
I get why she offered it this way—to make it easy for clients to have an “all in one” package.
These days, each of those jobs would range from $500 to $5000+ EACH. The value, of course, is relative to what you value. If you value a kickass website, it’s worth it. If you just want a place for people to glance at and move on, then whatever, it’s not really worth much to you and you’ll pay the least amount of money you can.
For my services as a web developer, I charge less than she does but more than most people in my niche (holistic, woo-woo, metaphysical, creative) are used to paying OR want to pay.
The clients I do work with, however, have no issue paying my rate because they see the value.
Here’s why I charge what I do to build a new site:
+ It’s time consuming, and I usually spend twice as much time on a site as I state I will.
+ I have 30+ years’ experience of web design, graphic design, editing, coaching, and site building.
+ I’ve got WordPress experience. I know it well.
+ I customize the site as much as I possibly can without knowing code to design it from scratch.
+ It is a LOT of work, with a lot of little tweaks and things to remember to do to make it function correctly.
+ I provide a service that my clients can’t do on their own.
+ It relieves the stress and confusion of having to build their own site.
My time and expertise are valuable. Just like your business is valuable to you and others.
Building a site isn’t just throwing up some graphics and words. It’s creating a space for your business to thrive and grow and connect with your own customers or clients. I want to support THAT and watch YOU shine. That is immensely important to me. (Thus, while I’m working on your site, I’m also infusing it with a lot of good juju love.)
My fee to build your site is an investment in YOU and growing your livelihood. You know the work you do is valuable. You do your clients a service when you present yourself and your business in the best light possible so they feel inspired to say YES to working with you!
Take the leap to invest in your website.
You’re worth it. Your business is worth it. And I’ll help you make it easy.
